Content Research

 Content Research

By: Sharmeen Shivji

This weeks assignment was to put together a survey for the content of my magazine and send it out to people. My teacher wanted about 100 people to fill it out but I got 82, which I think is still a solid audience count to analyze. My survey asked a variety of questions about what they would like to see in my magazine and I was shocked by the results of some questions because they were really varied. Additionally, people were having a hard timing choosing some answers because they haven't really thought about what they specifically like to see in magazines. Here are my results:

As you can see there was a clear answer to what the audience's favorite name was for my magazine which was "Prodigy" at 48.8%. To be honest, that was also my favorite name because it's unique and it highlights what each person in my magazine is. The second most chosen name was "Success" at 12.2%, I don't really like this name because it isn't as catchy and seems very basic compared to "Prodigy". So I will probably chose "Prodigy" or "The Prodigies" for my magazine.
The second question was who should be featured on the front page of the magazine, the answers for this one was varied and was changing constantly. The four people listed here were people I was already planning on having inside my magazine, however I just needed to chose one for the front. The one chosen the most at 35.4% is the owner of "RARE" which is a shoe store in Pembroke Pines Mall. He is my cousin and he started his business with nothing and grew it to a very successful business at just the age of 22. I was glad he was chosen because I feel like compared to other people listed he has already at a very young age accomplished very much while the others are on their way to. The others are definitely very impressive but they are still on their way to becoming successful.
This question on which editorial feature I should do was a very close one between "Photoshoots" and "Interviews". Interviews had a higher choosing just by a small percent, however this shows me that I should include both these features because they were both very popular. I wanted to include more visual aspects in my magazine so by including both these features I can accomplish that. Additionally, I think the photoshoots mixed with interviews will help the audience connect and interact with the model even more and really get to know them.
The settings that the audience liked to see the most were in front of plain wallpapers and around nature. I think because they were both popular I can incorporate both of them into my magazine. I was thinking to have the cover of the magazine be in front of plain wallpapers and then the advertisements around nature. The plain wallpapers will allow the audience to really see the model and the text without it being to congested. Also, the cover of business magazines and fashion magazines are usually in front of plain wallpapers.

I was most surprised with this question due to its varied answers, every time I would check the responses there would be a different color scheme that people would like better. In the end, the one chosen was red, black, white, gold which is the option I was going for. I wanted to use this color scheme because I felt like it screams success and elegance, it goes along with the basic scheme of elegant dances. The second most chosen one was option 4 which I felt like was a little too dull for my magazine because I want my magazine to be loud and extra. These were the color schemes I had listed in order:

This question was another that I was surprised to see due to its varied results. Additionally, whenever someone would reach this question they would take a second longer to really think because it is not something they usually pay attention to. The most chosen advertisement was shoes, however since my cover will be about a shoe business owner and the feature article will also be about him, I don't want my magazine to turn into a shoe magazine. So I will probably chose one of the other popular options like clothes, jewelry, or perfume/cologne.
You're probably getting tired of me saying this but I was also surprised by the results of this question because of the fact that Nike was the most popular brand. I originally thought that one of the more designer brands would be chosen, however Louis Vuitton was a very close one. I don't have specific brand chosen yet that I would like to feature, but I will most likely chose a designer one due to it being more expensive and on the luxury side.

For this question, I kind of already had an idea of what people would chose the most because people always want to see what other people did to be successful so they can learn and do the same thing. Also, I just think its like something that everyone likes to see on how someone started from nothing and built a whole business. The second most popular one chosen was advice from the person on how to succeed which I feel like I can include in one of the interview questions.
This question showed me that my magazine will mostly appeal to people between 16-19 years old, however it will also appeal to people between 20-25 as they were also a good part of the audience. The additional percentages were people between 12-15 years old and 26 and over. This implies that my magazine might not be exactly their taste as I wasn't able to collect more responses from those age ranges, so I don't have enough information to declare whether or not they would like my magazine.

I wasn't really surprised by the answers to this questions as I thought that people either will like new and chic clothing or formal but fashionable. Because the most popular choice was formal but fashionable clothing I will most likely have that on my cover and then within my magazine have a mixture of chic and new trends.

These are examples of new trends:

This assignment really helped me come up with a solid vision for magazine as before I wasn't really sure what I was doing and my ideas were all over the place. By seeing what my audience wants really helped me navigate my ideas and make up a plan that I can confidently stay with.
